The Judge and .410 shotgun shells and .45 LC

The Judge and .410 shotgun shells and .45 LC

I recently bought a Judge. I have now been told that it cant use regular .410 shells even 2 ones. Supposedly you can only shoot special .410 shotgun shells made especially for The Judge. Also, without some adapter it is recommended NOT to shoot .45 LC shells.

Now in hearing this Im pretty pissed if that advice is indeed fact.

I just got back from a hunting/camping trip where my friend had a Judge and he shot regular 2 .410 and .45 long colt shells with no problem. Are there some Judge models that limit uses of this type of ammo??

What say you??

A buddy of mine has a judge, and he had .45 long, and regular .410 shot in. As far as I know, both are fine to shoot.

Boxoftruth covers which rounds do more damage. The .45 longs are a winner hands down compared to the .410.

Sounds like BS to me. Where did you hear this? IMO, the Judge is a solution in search of a problem.

There are 2 judge versions, one can only shoot shorter .410 shells and 45's the other has a slightly longer chamber and can shoot any .410 and 45.

I don't even think there is such thing as a taurus .410 only shell.

But yes, the Judge is a solution in search of a problem. Why would I ever want to shoot someone with birdshot? Just to piss them off more?

If I was close enough for that to be effective, a 45 would surely finish the job.

Do you remember the video Taurus put out when they were introducing the Judge, touting it as an anticarjacking deterrent? Give 'em a blast of birdshot right in the face, from the car window! Brilliant :sarc:

If I needed to carry a snake gun, I'd be looking at this one.

Federal has recently (first saw it about 6 months ago) come out with .410 Handgun ammunition, apparently designed for the Judge. http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...ll-ammunition/

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/w...otshell-sm.jpg

While the linked site says it's available in #4 buckshot, I've only seen it in 000. One difference I've noticed, however, is that most .410 000 loads have 3 pellets - Federal's has 4 per round.

That said, you don't need this ammunition to shoot the judge. As long as you shoot 2 1/2" shells you'll be fine. As for shooting the Long Colt .45s, I have not heard of any problems.

I've only had my Judge out once, and I'll share my experience. I had a box of Winchester .410s with #7 birdshot, a box of Sellier and Bellot .410s with 000 buckshot, and a box of MagTec Long Colt .45s. I immediately noticed that once the brass hit the cylinder, I had to apply pressure to the S&B shells to get them to get them fully inserted. After shooting, I could not get the ejector rod to budge. I had to use a section of cleaning rod to punch the empty shells out of the cylinder.

The Winchester birdshot, on the other hand, loaded and unloaded normally. As did the .45 LC.

Observations: The recoil isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The accuracy with the .45 LC is rather impressive. I was shooting at an old 5 gallon metal paint can, and even at 10 ft, only one or two pellets of birdshot penetrated the can. I don't know if 2, 4, or 6 shot would have done better. The pattern was about the size of a basketball. At up to 15 yards, a quick point and shoot with the buckshot knocked the can over. Since I was using the same can over and over, it was hard to tell how many hits I got each time, but at longer ranges (15 yards), it looked like some of the buckshot didn't penetrate the metal.

Recommendations: It wouldn't hurt to get a few boxes of the Federal .410 Handgun. All the WallyWorld's around here have had it in stock lately. They come 20 to a box, but they're not much more expensive than a 25 round box of quality birdshot. Based on my experience with the S&B, I'd go with Federal, Winchester, or Remington in .410. As for Long Colt, any decent loads should be okay. If nothing else, the Judge is a formidable piece with the .45 LC.

In all reality, no one ever needs a snake gun. Snakes are shy and would much rather slither away then bite/fight. There is no need to kill them.

The Judge is the perfect Road Pheasant gun. When driving around the country, the dang birds just sit on the side of the road. Just perfect for drive by's on Pheasants. :s9:
